Description
This stunning Star Kazak rug is Fatima’s eighth rug with reWoven although I must add that this rug was also produced with the help of her daughter in law Naibe. I was reluctant to give her this design since she has never woven it before. When I asked if she wanted to try it she laughed and told me she could handle it just fine. It was commissioned in early June and Fatima’s family was very happy to receive it as the COVID19 lockdown had made the last few months a difficult to weather financially. A lot of weavers opt out of weaving in the summer because of how hot it is, but Fatima finds weaving outside on her veranda quite relaxing. Kazak rugs are distinguished from other rug families by their large, bold geometric shapes. Though most of the symbolism represented by Kazak design elements have been lost through the years, it is said by some scholars that this rug, with its many large and small star shapes was meant to depict the after life.
