Description
This Pinwheel Kazak rug was woven by Mehriban Saparova between November 2018 and February 2019 and featured at our very first tour in September 2019. Mehriban usually weaves alone, but this by no means indicates that she is slower than her contemporaries. To the contrary Mehriban is an incredibly hard worker and often weaves until her fingers bleed….literally! No matter what I say, I cannot convince her to take her time.
Pinwheel Kazak carpets display a striking design of dark blue boxes decorated with spirals, diagonal green dragons and white rosettes. In addition to these staple elements of the design, the borders can vary along with minor motifs that may be woven into the navy spiral and red field. In view of Caucasian weaving tradition’s insistence on adhering to historic designs, it is not surprising that Pinwheel Kazak carpets were woven until well into the 20th century. They are a beautiful composition with timeless appeal.
Estimated Age of Antique Inspiration: first half 19th century
