Description
This is Ayat’s 7th carpet with reWoven. Ayat lives about a 3 minute drive from Lambeli, the small settlement in Karachop from which the Lambalo design originated hundreds of years ago. This Lambalo was commissioned in January 2019 in the middle of winter. The winter season is the best time for weaving because the cold weather tends to encourage people to stay indoors. Azeri homes usually appear quite large on the outside but in fact everyone sleeps, eats and relaxes in the one room with a small metal stove. In our weaver’s homes this universal room is dominated by their large, wooden loom. Ayat filled the multiple borders with a wide array of colors and ornaments, beyond what the template suggested. The rich, madder–red field displays beautiful abrash, an Arabic word referring to the various shades of color resulting from the natural dye process.
