This is Tarlan’s 10th carpet with reWoven and is only the second time the we have attempted this variation of the classic bordjalu kazak. It’s a design that originated right here in kvemo kartli in Georgia. One of the things we love most about Tarlan is how spunky she is despite being 72 years old. She never allows us to carry rugs or yarn. She will slap your hand, grab the rug and take it wherever it needs to go.

Bordjalou Kazak Size 189 x 194 Circa 1880 South East Georgia JP Willborg collection
The distinguishing element of the Bordjalou rugs is the alternating, hooked-triangle shapes. The contrasting interlocking hooks give dimension to the rug, inviting the viewer to decide if the white hooked streak lies behind the colored halves or floats about them. The zig-zag rhythm makes it appear dynamic and full of energy. The center field of Bordjalou rugs can vary widely. This example contains two diamond shapes featuring the same interlocking hooks as the border.
Name: Terlan Gojayeva
Children: no children, widowed
Age: 78 (born 1947)
Village: Kosalar, Tetriskaro, Republic of Georgia
Terlan has four brothers and three sisters. While she only studied to the second grade, her sharp mathematical mind is evident as she computes the length the width of a rug, and required number of knots to complete the intricate designs within it. Terlan was married to a war hero, but he passaed away before they were able to have children. We first herd of Terlan by the recommendations of others. We knocked on Terlan’s door several times during the years of our search for rug weavers, but each time, we were denied. Either the season was not right, or Terlan was already busy at the loom with a different project. Thankfully, our yarn ultimately ended up in the hands of her neighbors. Despite the lack of initial success with Terlan, in many ways it was she who opened the door for reWoven to enter her village, Kosalar.
