Presenting the Memling Gul Kazak. This beautiful carpet was woven by Tukazban in mid January. Tukazban is a retired math teacher from Kosalar. She and her sister Fatima usually work in tandem to produce some of reWovens best rugs. This rug features three rows of hexagonal “Guls” which in Azebaijani means flowers. This element is known internationally as Memling guls after the 15th century european artist Has Memling who popularized this element in some of his most famous paintings.

While Tukazvan just started to weave with reWoven, she has spent many decades at the loom. But like most other women in her village, she stopped weaving in the early to mid-nineties, except for a few rugs later on. When Tukazvan connected with reWoven, it had been sixteen years since she had last woven. She and her sister, Fatma, returned to the craft at the same time. Both of them had been teachers, so they never had to rely on rug weaving to contribute financially to their families. Tukazvan was a math teacher, while her sister taught Russian language. But they both returned to loom in their respective homes at their advanced ages, with such excellence, it was as if they had never left it.
