Ziyafat, the oldest of eight sisters with no brothers, jokes that she was such a sweet daughter that her parents were convinced to have as many as possible. While there is little doubt Ziyafat was an adorable baby girl, other factors likely contributed to the long string of girls. In a cultural where sons are highly prized, it is not uncommon to find sibling sets with numerous sisters until the son finally comes. Ziyafat’s parents continued to try for a son, but were solely blessed with additional beautiful daughters.
A brood of daughters also meant an expansive team of weavers. The majority of Ziyafat’s sisters know how to weave, and one of them, Shoret, is also a weaver with reWoven. All but the two youngest have learned the craft of the loom. They came of age after the craft was already abandoned. Rug weaving’s point of demise created a clear line of demarcation across this sister set.
